Community-Student Engagement

In 2013, the Texas Legislature enacted House Bill 5 (HB5), with a broad set of requirements impacting public schools and reducing the predominance of standardized testing in Texas public education. One provision of the bill was the requirement that districts conduct a community and student engagement survey and report results to the public on August 8, 2014.

While reducing the number of required standardized tests, HB5 also provides a vehicle through which districts can showcase areas of excellence and success beyond the limited scope of those test scores. The Community and Student Engagement survey allows evaluation of nine factors:

  • Fine arts
  • Wellness and physical education
  • Community and parental involvement
  • 21st century workforce development program
  • Second language acquisition program
  • Digital learning environment
  • Dropout prevention strategies
  • Educational programs for GT students
  • Compliance with statutory reporting and policy requirements

HB5 tasked local committees with determining the criteria the district would use to evaluate and assign their Community and Student Engagement performance ratings. The bill gave wide latitude for customization of reports. In Boerne, evaluation criteria in the nine different areas were established by committees comprised of BISD faculty, administrators and community members.

Like other tools used to evaluate schools, the Community and Student Engagement self-report offers just a portion of the total picture of our school district. The criteria established and the process used offer Boerne ISD the opportunity to evaluate and discuss what is working well and what needs improvement - on individual campuses and in the district as a whole - as we look forward.

The following ratings were assigned for 2014-15, based on the criteria and evaluation of the individual campus committees:
